The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has announced that from 1 June 2026, zero-emission goods vehicles weighing between 3,501kg and 4,250kg will officially transition into the Class 7 MOT testing regime.
This update which is detailed in MOT Special Notice 01-26 takes away complex HGV bureaucracy and aligns large electric vans with standard LCV rules.
Under the new law, zero-emission 4.25 tonne vans drop into Class 7 MOTs, the same category as standard diesel, petrol and hybrid vans.
The shift to Class 7 means these electric vans will only need their first MOT three years after registration while MOT fees will be significantly lower.
It also changes how these vehicles are regulated for use on UK road with no more tachographs – drivers will follow simple GB domestic hours rules – while restrictions on how far an electric van could travel from its home base have been lifted.
